What's The Big Idea?
Concatenative Synthesis
is a method of synthesis for creating new sounds from short pieces, or segments, of audio. This process resembles granular synthesis but offers more control through feature analysis based selection of the grains (segments).
DelayCat is a unique tool that combines concatenative synthesis with a delay line. It works by analyzing and breaking down your sound into segments in real-time. Then, it uses these segments to create new delayed sounds, selecting segments with a special algorithm incorporating delay time.
With DelayCat, you can make all kinds of effects, from regular delays to completely new textures. It gives you more control over your sound, mixing the best parts of regular delays and concatenative synthesis into a unique blend.
DelayCat can also use the analysis data for things like figuring out when a sound starts (onset detection) and intelligent automation of different parts of the delay.
DelayCat was published and presented at the International Conference for Digital Audio Effects (DAFx) in 2023 during the early development of the plugin. The technical research paper is publicly available via the DAFx archive.
